Our Year 4 class visited The Rising Sun Country Park and took a step back in time to support learning in their History local area study. The first activity of the day was exploring the Rising Sun Country Park by completing a heritage walk and keeping a close eye out for any signs of mining from the past. The class made their way to the Pit Heap where they looked at maps and pictures over time and discussed the changes that have happened from the park originally being a colliery to as it is today a country park.
In the afternoon, the class created a mine and they were able to ‘go down the mine.’ When inside of the mine children had the opportunity to look at artefacts from the past including the Davy lamp, a bait box, water bottle, pickaxe and coal shovel.
The children then had the opportunity to look at Pitmen Paintings and as a group acted out the scene from each painting.
To finish off the day, the children were able to use charcoal to create their own Year 4 Rising Sun Colliery banner.
